Biotechnology can be defined in at least two ways. It means any technique which uses living organisms or parts of organisms to make or modify products, improve plant or animal productivity or to develop micro-organisms for specific use.
Biotechnology has tremendous potential in improving human and animal health, increasing agricultural productivity and providing a safe and clean environment. Biotechnology is a multi-disciplinary and rapidly advancing area and well-trained manpower is a pre-requisite for meaningful R&D and production in biotechnology.
Biotechnology is a frontier technology which has the potential to provide very substantial benefits to society in a wide range of sectors such as agriculture, medical and health, forestry, animal husbandry, environment protection, and improving the quality of products and services.
It has been said that the 21st century will belong to biotechnology.
The Sector offers career opportunities, both in research and industry, particularly in area of medicine and agriculture. The work of biotechnologist is scientific and research oriented. Research and development, quality control, clinical research manufacturing and production, regulatory affairs etc- A biochemical development engineer is involved in new product scale –up, process improvement, technology transfer, and process validation activities. A number of agriculture, dairy, horticulture industry also exists which would employ biotechnologist. Some drug companies in biotechnology like Dabur, Ranbaxy, Hindustan Lever etc. which have their R&D units would be another area for qualified biotechnologist.
Opportunities for biotechnology students exist in agri-based industries involved in the production of transgenic plant, seed industries, tissue culture units, agri-chemicals as bio-fertilizers and biotechnology industry environmental amelioration, pharma industry and diagnosis, new drug molecules, clinical research etc. The success of a teaching programme is primarily judged by the quality of education imparted and placement of students passing out. These programme have flourished as students coming out of these program qualify in UGC-CSIR NET (National Eligibility Test) junior research fellowship (JRF)
A Biotechnologist may work in government organization like ICAR, DBT, DST, and other institute through sponsored projects.
